Alcohol and Energy Drinks A Dangerous Combo, Study Says

Researchers have published a study that shows college students combining caffeinated drinks with booze don’t realize how intoxicated they really are.

In a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, researchers at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan have concluded that mixing alcohol and energy drinks poses a serious public health risk, especially among college students. "We found that college students tended to drink more heavily, become more intoxicated, and have more negative drinking consequences on days they used both energy drinks and alcohol, compared to days they only used alcohol," said Megan Patrick, a research assistant professor and co-author of the study.

According to the study, students who either drank alcohol and energy drinks on the same day or who combined the two at the same time wound up spending more time drinking – thus consuming more alcohol – than they would have without the caffeinated drinks. The result of spending more hours drinking raised users' blood alcohol levels to higher peaks. But because of the stimulant effects of the energy drinks, the users reported that they felt less drunk than they actually were. "This can have serious potential health impacts, for example if people don't realize how intoxicated they actually are and decide to drive home," Patrick said.

But a similar study conducted by the Department of Community Health at the Boston University School of Public Health found that it wasn’t necessarily the combination of alcohol and caffeine that posed a risk, but the profile of the drinkers themselves that led to negative consequences. "It appears that the consumption of caffeinated alcoholic beverages has a direct effect on increasing risk by masking intoxication and making it easier for youth to consume more alcohol,” said Dr. Michael Siegel, one of the authors of the Boston University’s study. “It also appears that consumption of alcohol with caffeine may itself be a marker for youth who engage in riskier behavior.”

Most people know Sean Hyman from his regular appearances on Fox Business, CNBC, and Bloomberg Television, but what they don’t know is that Sean is a former pastor, and that his secret to investing is woven within the Bible.

During a recent private dinner with Sean, once he’d blessed the food, I wasted no time asking him what his secret is for investing so successfully.

I expected Sean to say that it was his years of experience at Charles Schwab or perhaps one of the complicated algorithms he uses for timing the stock market.

So when Sean responded that his secret to investing was the Bible, I was thoroughly shocked.
Yes, I knew Sean was a Christian (anyone who spends more than 1 minute with him will pick that up!). However, people usually keep their faith separate from things like . . . investing.

But not Sean.

KOMPAS.com – Ingin makan sehat setiap hari? Tak perlu repot hitung komponen nutrisi dari asupan harian. Cukup atur pola makan harian dengan pembagian rasio makan sehat.

Rasio tersebut menggunakan ukuran satu piring yang dibagi menjadi empat bagian. Bagian tersebut terdiri atas 1/4 porsi piring sumber karbohidrat, 1/4 porsi porsi protein rendah lemak, lebih dari 1/4 porsi sayuran, dan kurang dari 1/4 porsi buah.

“Menghitung asupan nutrisi sehari-hari cukup rumit dan sulit dilakukan masyarakat awam. Masyarakat cukup menuruti rasio makan sehat yang ada, tanpa perlu repot menghitung,” kata dokter gizi, Johannes Chandrawinata.

Menurutnya, pembagian porsi makan menjamin kecukupan asupan nutrisi harian. Karbohidrat dibutuhkan dalam jumlah sekitar 300 gram per hari, yang dibagi dalam tiga kali makan. Satu gram karbohidrat menghasilkan energi sebesar empat kalori.

Konsumsi karbohidrat berlebihan akan diubah menjadi simpanan lemak, yang berisiko menyebabkan berat badan meningkat. Sumber karbohidrat terdiri atas nasi, mi, atau umbi-umbian.

Untuk protein, seseorang membutuhkan sekitar 0,8 gram/kgBB/hari. Bila berat badan mencapai 50 kilogram maka kebutuhan protein setara 50 gram. Asupan protein berlebih meningkatkan risiko terkena gangguan atau batu ginjal.

Asupan protein bisa berasal dari hewan (hewani) dan sayuran (nabati). Untuk asupan protein hewani disarankan mengonsumsi ikan, daging tanpa kulit, dan putih telur yang rendah lemak, sehingga tidak menyebabkan peningkatan berat badan. Berikut beberapa contoh kandungan protein dalam makanan:
* 26 gram protein terkandung dalam 100 gram daging merah
* 24 gram protein terkandung dalam 100 gram ayam
* 19 gram protein terkandung dalam 100 gram ikan
* 14 gram protein terkandung dalam 100 gram tahu
* 8 gram protein terkandung dalam satu gelas atau 200 cc susu
* 6 gram protein terkandung dalam satu butir telur

Sayur dan buah merupakan sumber antioksidan dengan kandungan  vitamin dan mineral. Anti oksidan berfungsi sebagai pertahanan melawan radikal bebas yang banyak terdapat di lingkungan, termasuk makanan.
Setiap harinya seseorang harus mengonsumsi 3-5 porsi sayur dan 2-4 porsi buah. Satu porsi buah, setara 100 gram, terdapat dalam satu buah pisang, sepotong pepaya, sepotong melon, atau 10 buah berukuran kecil misalnya anggur, kelengkeng, atau duku. Satu porsi sayur setara satu gelas kecil tanpa kuah atau setara satu mangkuk berukuran sedang, dengan berat kurang lebih 100 gram.

Selain menjaga porsi makan, Johannes juga menyarankan masyarakat rajin olahraga dan istirahat yang cukup. Kecukupan porsi makan, rajin olahraga, dan istirahat cukup akan menjamin kesehatan tubuh seseorang sehingga tidak mudah terinfeksi berbagai penyakit.

“Khusus untuk makanan, bijaklah dalam memilih. Jangan mengonsumsi makanan yang terlalu banyak tambahan kalori seperti yang digoreng, bersantan, atau pangan olahan seperti corned atau sosis. Untuk asupan hewani hindari bagian dengan lemak tinggi seperti kulit, sayap, kaki, iga, buntut, dan organ dalam,” kata Johannes.

KOMPAS.com - Banyak di antara kita yang masih percaya bahwa daging merah, seperti sapi, kambing, atau babi, adalah salah satu penyebab terbesar timbulnya penyakit jantung. Padahal, jika daging dipilih dan diolah dengan benar, kita dapat mengurangi kadar lemak jenuh di dalamnya, menghindari kulit keriput lebih awal, penyumbatan pembuluh arteri, dan juga peningkatan kolesterol. Berikut caranya:

1. Pilih yang terbaik. Apabila Anda ingin membeli daging,  pilihlah yang masih segar, baru, dan memiliki kandungan lemak paling rendah.

2. Tanpa lemak. Sebagai pembeli, Anda bisa meminta untuk dipilihkan daging tanpa lemak kepada si penjual. Biasanya di supermarket besar, daging tanpa lemak lebih mudah dijumpai karena sudah diberi label "tanpa lemak".

3. Buang lemaknya. Potong dan buang bagian berlemak yang masih menempel pada daging sebelum diolah.

4. Rebus atau panggang. Olah daging dengan cara direbus atau dipanggang daripada digoreng karena hanya akan menambah kandungan lemak dan kolesterolnya. Jika Anda masih ingin menggoreng daging, gunakan minyak zaitun yang telah terbukti sangat ampuh dalam memerangi kolesterol.

5. Hapus minyak. Hapus kelebihan minyak dan kalori pada daging yang dipanggang dengan menggunakan tisu minyak.

6. Tahu batasnya. Kurangi mengonsumsi daging, yaitu tidak lebih dari satu potong daging atau sekitar 85 gram daging merah dalam seminggu.

Ternyata sangat mudah bukan? Mengonsumsi daging rendah lemak dan mengandung lemak tak jenuh dapat membuat usia Anda 6 tahun terlihat lebih muda.
